BUHS celebrated the World Environment Day 2014

Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) celebrated the World Environment Day 2014. On this occasion a seminar was organized by Department of Occupational & Environmental Health, BUHS on June 05, 2014 at BUHS Auditorium. Dr. M. H. Faruquee, Head, Department of Occupational & Environmental Health presented a research paper in the seminar on “salinity intrusion in surface and underground water and hypertension among the population of coastal areas”. Professor Dr. Sk. Akhtar Ahmad, Treasurer, BUHS chair the session. In the paper Dr. Faruquee showed that salinity intrusion already reached to some areas in Satkhira District where in the past there was no such salinity in ground water. In this study it was found that about one-fifth samples water had higher than the Bangladesh limit. Among the study population the researchers found that around half of the respondents had Systolic blood pressure above 120 mmHg and around two-third had Diastolic blood pressure over 80mmHg. Individually drinking water salinity showed insignificant relation with blood pressure (both Systolic and Diastolic) but cooking water had found to be positive relations with increase blood pressure. Among the participants Professor Shah Md Zahurul Haque Asna, Professor Zahid Hassan, Taslima Khatun discussed on this presentation. Discussants opined that not only the hypertension but also some other health problems occur due to salinity intrusion, we have to aware and work to reduce climate change occurrences. The seminar was facilitated by Mr. Md Abul Fazal.
